The Ohio Bar - Stainless Steel

The stainless steel version of our 20KG Rogue Ohio Bar is machined and assembled in Columbus, Ohio, and features a 200,000 PSI tensile strength shaft with an exclusive Rogue knurl pattern that’s 100% in its original, machined form for an unmatched feel.

Along with the firm but non-abrasive grip, the Stainless Steel Ohio Bar’s dual knurl marks optimize it for both Olympic lifts and Powerlifting—with the quality US steel and precision bronze bushings ensuring a smooth, consistent spin + a unique balance of whip and rigidity.

Like all of our bars bearing the “Ohio” name, we think this design represents more than just the Rogue brand. It’s a testament to where we work, who we are, and the pride we feel in making the best high-performance barbells in the industry.

Note on Stainless Steel: Barbells made from raw steel are not plated and therefore marks from the machining process may be visible. Stainless steel shafts will show CNC processing marks. These are cosmetic and will not impact the barbell's performance

KEY FEATURES OF THIS OHIO BAR:

Loading
1

Steel

This high tensile strength steel is manufactured in the USA and has proven to be one of the best steel variants for a multi-purpose barbell. Each barbell shaft is ground and polished prior to machining, allowing for a very smooth finish.

2

Machining

Every bar shaft is machined in Columbus, Ohio. A great deal of pride is built into each bar as the knurling process is an art. We spent months working on the knurl we believe to be the best for the Ohio Bar.

To test the knurl it is more a beer tasting process than exact measurement. There is a look and feel that go into testing every bar.

The Look & Feel of Stainless Steel

With no plating, the knurl on the Stainless Steel Ohio Bar is left exactly how we machined it, providing a great feel that cannot be achieved with other finishes. It’s similar to the knurl feel from a bare steel shaft, but with better corrosion resistance. The combination of a stainless steel shaft and chrome sleeves also creates a sharp look with few equals. Please Note: Rogue recommends using a synthetic bristle brush, NOT a steel brush, to clean a stainless steel shaft. Steel on steel can cause rusting over time. See more tips here: Bar Care & Maintenance.

Assembly

The Ohio Bar is assembled with bronze bushings, which act as bearing surfaces between the bar sleeve and bar shaft. This is a very robust way of building a barbell, and can produce a smooth, consistent spin not possible with lesser import bars. Each bar comes with an “Ohio Bar Card” that has the initials of the Rogue team member that built it.

Performance

The multi-purpose Ohio Bar will have normal “whip” during Olympic weightlifting and enough stiffness to hold for heavy Powerlifting. The steel in this bar is proven as an excellent choice for weightlifters.

F SCALE™

The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

OXIDATION RATE

The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

*Warranty against bending does not cover any bar which has been damaged due to negligent or faulty use, alteration, maintenance, storage or handling by the user. Negligent or faulty use includes abusive dropping of the bar (i.e., dropping the bar on a box, bench, spotter arms or pins in a power rack, excessive dropping with insufficient or damaged bumpers, or excessive dropping with iron plates, and similar usage). Any specific issues regarding a Rogue product with which a customer is not satisfied will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We have found that most problems with bars we replace are related to abusive use rather than manufacturing or materials issues.

Whichever barbell finish you choose, Rogue has provided some helpful tips for long term Bar Care & Maintenance.

Disappointed regarding the processing quality
I got the Ohio Bar in Stainless Steel and expexted not only a great bar to lift with but also a superb bar regarding the processing quality. I used to work with CNC milling and turning machines in Germany and I know what quality management and control means. Therefore I was disappointed to get a bar where quality control has clearly failed. This is nothing that limits the usecase of the bar but something I disagree with regarding the high price of this bar and and it is also disappointing when you consider the quality claim rogue claims to have. In my opinion one has to get a discount for this bar because of poor processing quality. Nothing rogue should be proud of. I also got a SZ Curl bar which is perfectly processed. Should be the case with the Ohio Bar as well.

All stainless the way to go for low maintenance
Good investment, should have picked up sooner. Arrived in 3 days. Solid packaging. Flawless condition, just wipe down. Knurling feels good and enhances grip - can cut back on chalk. Using for deadlifts and overhead lifts.

Stop debating.
I am a very particular person; I looked for months researching all types of barbells. All the knurl patterns, all the finishes. I did the analysis of cost over time in terms of investment and I finally built up the courage to buy the stainless Ohio bar. The second I opened it, I knew I had made the right choice. It's not as stiff as a Power bar for squats, but for every other thing I do with it, I couldn't be happier. I touch my barbell 6 days a week. The cost of that barbell is $1.60/day for the first year I lift. I expect to have this stainless steel barbell the rest of my life.

Far from perfect
The bar is OK. I know that the claim is that much engineering went into the design, but it does not amount to much if you are not throwing it loaded. I like that it is stainless steel. Where the bar truly falls short is in the knurling. It’s a diamond shape with a point, and that point is SHARP! Yes, I get it, more friction, but I bet you can achieve nearly the same without a sharp edge. C'mon guys, you already have it in the lathe... simply remove a few microns! I have skin injuries by contact with the bar. My bald head has been scratched a few times, and I mean bloody. Also my forearms. Would i buy it again? Nope. Would I recommend it? Nopagain. It's steel. It does not bend under 300 lb (my max) and that is all good. There are plenty of much more inexpensive alternatives that do the same.

We're sorry to hear you are not thrilled with your Stainless Steel Ohio Bar! This variant is not plated which gives you the most natural feel of our standard knurling. Our team will reach out to you to investigate if there are any issues with your bar's knurling!

Work of art
I ordered this bar with the stainless steel sleeves to replace a relatively cheap bar from a local sporting goods store. I was not prepared for the level of quality that a barbell could achieve, much less this one. It's essentially a work of art - the finish is amazing and you can really feel the quality in your hands, especially with the knurling without a coating on it. This bar is absolutely worth the money and I need to get over how how good it looks since it is a tool at the end of the day. Mine arrived with a small issue but Rogue took care of it immediately (great customer service).

Sharper than expected, better spin than expected
Bought the boneyard version about three months ago. Upgraded from an old secondhand black zinc Ohio bar that was oxidizing more than I cared to maintanence. Boy the knurling seems so much sharper on the SS version since it doesn’t require a coating! So much so that my buddy wouldn’t touch it for a month after our first high volume WOD with it. I even initially had my doubts. Fast forward a few weeks and my thumbs and hands had toughened up and don’t even notice it anymore. Can’t say the same for my shins, but that’s what pants or sleeves are for. I’ve only used chalk on it once, during a partner WOD, because 99.9% of the time it sticks to my hands like glue. This is how the Ohio bar was meant to feel. The spin wasn’t too impressive when it arrived. Turns out it was a little dirty. No biggy. A quick wipe down and some 3 in 1 oil to BOTH ends of the sleeves has this thing spinning on par with some bearing bars I’ve seen. Spins FOREVER (no exaggeration, I literally lose patience and have yet to see it stop on its own) with weight on it. Yet it’s completely balanced during back squats, bench, etc. Oh, and this is a personal point but, it came with Brass bushings (yay)! My understanding is composite bushings have a tendency to flatten and throw off the spin after a while on rare occasions. But don’t quote me. One bar to do it all. Jack of all trades.

Great bar
I bought this through a Black Friday deal and this is an amazing bar. I got the stainless steel Ohio bar with chrome sleeves and I absolutely love it. The knurling is quite aggressive by my standards but not too much. I use it for mainly Olympic lifting and some accessory exercises. The whip is decent and the spin is really good in my opinion. So far I’m really happy. For the price point I didn’t see any point in getting a coated bar such as the cerakote one. We had a minor issue with another Rogue product and after emailing the team they got right back to us and send a replacement immediately. Customer service was terrific as well! Thanks Rogue!
