The Castro Bar

For athletes who prefer the classic look and feel of a bare steel barbell, the Rogue Castro Bar belongs in your arsenal. This polished 28.5MM bar is machined and individually assembled in Columbus, OH, and features the same quality U.S. steel, bronze bushings, and dual knurl marks as our flagship Ohio Bar. The texture of the signature knurling allows for a firm grip without feeling sharp, and the bare steel won't get slippery in sweaty hands--making the Castro Bar less dependent on chalk than many coated bars.

With a minimum tensile strength of 190,000 PSI, the Castro Bar has the perfect balance of whip for the Olympic lifter and rigidity for the powerlifter. And its lifetime warranty against bending* ensures it can stand up to daily abuse—whether in a garage gym, college weight room, or professional training facility.

A bare steel bar like this one does require a different level of upkeep than most oxide, zinc or chrome plated bars. Occasionally brushing the Castro Bar down with 3-in-1 or WD-40 will help prevent rusting and create a nice patina look. This is how bars were made for decades and it really produces an unmatched feel.

F SCALE™

The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

OXIDATION RATE

The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

*Warranty against bending does not cover any bar which has been damaged due to negligent or faulty use, alteration, maintenance, storage or handling by the user. Negligent or faulty use includes abusive dropping of the bar (i.e., dropping the bar on a box, bench, spotter arms or pins in a power rack, excessive dropping with insufficient or damaged bumpers, or excessive dropping with iron plates, and similar usage). Any specific issues regarding a Rogue product with which a customer is not satisfied will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We have found that most problems with bars we replace are related to abusive use rather than manufacturing or materials issues.

Please Note: A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Castro bar will be given to the families of two fallen Navy SEALs. See their story here.

Like any fine piece of machined steel, a bare steel barbell will require some upkeep. Occasionally brushing the bar down with 3-in-1 oil or WD-40 will create a beautiful patina look. This is how bars were made for decades and it really does produce an unmatched feel.

Bar is filthy and difficult to clean.
Touching the bar leaves my hands looking like I just played with oily graphite. I've cleaned the bar twice and I'm still getting the same residue each time I use it. It's annoying having to avoid ruining clothes and spreading the grime on the bar to other gym equipment. Are the bars not cleaned after they're manufactured? I didn't expect this to be an issue.

Awesome bar for any home gym
I purchased the Castro Bar on a recommendation from a friend. I love this bar. The bar has great knurl and spin. I mainly use it for basic movements like squats and presses. But you can use it for cleans and jerks. Definitely would recommend to anyone wanting a great all around barbell for their home gym!

Excellent Bar!
I noticed some reviews of the Castro bar reported problems with rust. I've had my Castro bar for about 10 years. I oiled it when I first received it, then again about 3 years later. I haven't oiled it since then. Attached is a photo I just took of the bar. I've used in my basement for this whole time. My basement doesn't have a dehumidifier and there's some water water in the sump almost all of the time. I haven't had any rust issues. This is a great bar!

dont get this one
Would never get this one again. For same price get the black barbells. These corroded in about a month's time. Too difficult to clean. Stay away

5 years later
Had two of these for several years. One kept in garage environment, other kept in indoor in constant climate control. Both patina'd equally, but both still spin well. Decided to clean one of them up with acid bath and wire brush which is shown in the photos. Functionally they work great, but be aware that the bar will corrode even in A/C if you're not constantly brushing these down with oil.

The Perfect All Arounder
I bought three of these in 2014 and they are still going strong! Sure they get rusty when exposed to the elements, but nothing that a steel bristle brush and some 3-in-1 can't fix. They end up with a darker deeper tone, which looks awesome. The bare steel grip is also easier to hold on to for cleans and snatches. The spin is solid, with a little cleaning once every few years, and this thing can handle any weight you throw at it. I am super happy I decided on these and happy to be the 50th Review.

Good Bar, Superb Knurling
I originally planned on getting an ohio power bar, but at the time i bought this, this was the only bare steel bar in stock. That being said, I am very happy with this bar. I'm a Toolmaker by trade, and can appreciate the beautiful knurling job done by Rogue. I mainly use it for strengthlifting movements, and the knurling is great for deadlifts. Grabs your hands very well, but without tearing them up. Since there is no center knurl, I put hockey tape on the center of the bar for squats, and works well. I may still get the Ohio Power bar in the future, but I'm glad i bought this bar first. Great Versatility, Great Craftsmanship, MADE IN USA!

Great bar!
I wanted a bare steel bar for general crossfit use and this bar worked perfectly. Good knurling, but not uncomfortable. Good amount of whip.
