Rogue Friction Grip KG Change Plates (IWF)

When a half-kilogram can mean the difference between matching or beating a personal record, you need a change plate that loads fast and won’t budge on the bar. Rogue’s Friction Grip KG Change Plates meet the challenge. These durable, IWF-approved competition discs feature a rubberized “Friction Grip” interior coating, designed for quick, stable loading on the outside of a collar.

Before the advent of the International Weightlifting Federation's "1KG Rule" in 2005, competitions required that a bar be advanced by 2.5KG increments. This led to long delays as loaders had to remove collars in order to add weight. With FG change plates like these, competitive lifters can add 1KG without adjusting the collar position—greatly reducing downtime at events and keeping the focus on the athletes themselves.

Rogue Friction Grip KG Change Plates are now available in six sizes—0.5kg, 1kg, 1.5kg, 2kg, 2.5kg, and 5kg—and can be ordered as single-increment pairs or in full 25 KG sets. Each plate features a matte finish, Rogue branding, and the official IWF logo embossed on the back.

Plate Sizes:

  • 0.5KG FG (White): 135MM diameter; 12.5MM thickness
  • 1.0KG FG (Green): 160MM; 15MM
  • 1.5KG FG (Yellow): 175MM; 18MM
  • 2.0KG FG (Blue): 190MM; 19MM
  • 2.5KG FG (Red): 210MM; 19MM
  • 5.0KG FG (White): 230MM; 26MM

Great Plates
I am very happy with the plates. Pro: you don't need collars when using them and you can quickly add some weight to an exercise. Con: Of course it is more difficult to put them on and off the barbell. Personally I like them a lot. I use them for what they are made for.

I recommend the normal change plates instead...
If I could do it over, I would buy the normal change plates instead of the friction grip. They are nice plates and do what they are supposed to. For home use, it makes changing weights more difficult than it should be.

Variable fit by plate
Like others, I understand these are meant to be tight, but there is quite a bit of variation amongst the plates. Some are way too tight others are way too loose.

Extremely tight fit (too tight)
These plates are for competitions, and this have an unusually tight fit. Apparently this is on purpose. However, it makes them extremely difficult to add and remove from the bar. I would NOT recommend them unless you are in a situation where you MUST use competition plates.

Nice if your bar sleeves are small enough.
The tolerance on these is so tight that they might not fit depending on the bar you own/buy, and this varies plate per plate. I bought these with a stainless steel Ohio bar and for all but maybe 2 plates, adding/removing these takes a hammer and crowbar. My Texas Power bars are a great fit, snug but slide on and off easily enough. I also have a plate-loaded lat pulldown (not from Rogue) and these don't fit *at all*, so I'm forced to order normal the non-FG variety unless I plan to live with 10KG increments. Unless you can somehow guarantee your bar sleeves are small enough, don't buy these. If it wasn't for them fitting well on my Texas Power bars I would've exchanged them immediately, which is the reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. Cool concept, poor quality control.
